David Rosenthal, the creator of the CCC, is a 17 year veteran of the cashew industry and a long time advocate of food safety and responsible sourcing. He developed the concept of commodity specific certification after finding out that the food safety status of several companies overseas (with widely recognized certifications) was questionable. A long time friend and colleague who had carried out a multitude of inspections explained that this was because many of the facilities that were visited did not subscribe to the certifiers standards. Why??? Because many of the companies overseas have several facilities under one company name. Therefore it is more appropriate for the cashew industry to certify facilities, not companies.

Today, more than ever food safety is a primary concern for consumers and retailers alike. The FDA has acknowledged that it lacks the resources to effectively monitor overseas processing facilities. For this reason self monitoring through agencies like the CCC will become an invaluable and necessary component of the importing process.
